POB under 9 Blue v Woodlands

8/12/2012

On Saturday 11th the P.O.B under 9 Blue team played the final game of the season against Woodlands. Coach John Butler was concerned how his team would go against one of the top teams in the competition. This Woodlands team had clocked up some big scores against other teams including scoring 1oo points against the other Woodlands team. Taking how well Reagan John’s Senior Div 2 team finished off their season with some ‘champagne’ footy to dismantle a very good Marist team Coach Butler decided the Blue team {Smurfs] should apply some what we would say how about  Rasberry & Coke rugby instead.{Not the cheap stuff but the real thing}

A really good training run on Thursday night & with the guys switched on had us thinking we might be in for something special for our last game. We wouldn’t have our prop Sean Dockerty for the game as Seano was away chasing birds for the weekend {Quail shooting} so we grabbed Ben Jennings & Connor Douglas for the day. As a back-up we had Connor’s brother Carter to play if needed. We thought a change of positions might help our cause so we swapped our regular halfback Flynn Jackson & fullback Jake Kura around. Young Flynn isn’t the biggest player around so was getting bashed around by some bigger blokes in the other teams. One thing Jake is good at is communicating with the other guys & can read a game pretty good so we thought we would have a crack.

On game day with our game the only one on CPT5 the Woodlands coach thought it would be a good idea to extend the ground to a full half.{An extra 10 metres} This worried us as Woodlands like to use the ball wide with their gas on the outside; but we agreed as we have a bit of gas as well. Our game plan  was simple; to pressure the opposition with rushing defence & to attack the ball when Woody had procession. And when  we had the pill to play at pace. I thought there might have been a bit of over confidence in the Woodlands team & it proved right as we scored in the 1st couple of minutes. In a see-saw 1st half saw P.O.B leading Woodlands 20-10 at halftime. Our game plan was working with the  pressure the guys put on Woody had them trying to make play behind the advantage line. Halftime message was simple; don’t take the foot off the pedal & not to let them back into the game.
Early in the 2nd half we didn’t do that & Woodlands scored 2 quick tries. After the 2nd try Coach Butler had a tactical shoelace to do up & called the guys in. The message sunk in & the guys piled on the pressure to run-out comfortable winners 40-20. One of our tries was an absolute boomer a defensive line-out Coach Butler called for Sam McDonald to take it down & give to Lachie Nimmo to charge up the guts as there was a huge gap there. But to the coach’s dismay Lachie past the ball to Jake Kura who in turn set the backline away. Some excellent passing & support play had us scoring a fantastic team try in the corner. What do coach’s know. In all both teams played in a positive manner with the way they threw the ball around; both sets of supporters had to agree it was 1 of the best games of the season. One of the highlights was seeing Flynn Jackson getting his mojo back. With him at fullback he had more time & space to move in; he easily beat the 1st defender & was able to link up with the rest of the team. This was by far his best game of the season. Lachie Nimmo; Sam McDonald; Jack Butler; Josh McDonough & Lucy Hall were again standouts in the forward pack. These guys along with Jake our halfback really put pressure on the Woodlands attacking powers. Our other forward Cullen McLeod who is in his 1st season of footy really stood up in this game. His work rate in the lineout & maul time really helped us achieve our game plan. Cullen exceeded  more than the coach had asked for. Our backs played absolute blinders with Jake & Flynn as I already have stated having cracking games. Jacob Mika at 1st 5 is the teams rock. With his big defence & ability to beat defenders was a real handful to the Woodlands players. Our 2nd 5 /centre Daniel Bremner who is the smallest in our team & probably the whole competition plays with a ticker of Brad Thorn. This joker has gas; a step & doesn’t miss tackles. He is a real find this year & has a big future in the game. And to Ben Jennings & Connor Douglas thanks guys; you 2 entered in the spirit of the game & played like you have been playing all year with us. Coach Butler coached Connor a few years ago & is impressed with the way Connor’s game has come along. His try 1 of the highlights of the day. Overall a pretty good year; but what a way to finish the season off. Very hard to pick a player of the day as the whole team deserved it.

POB Under 9 Blue v Bluff

On Sat 4th August the Blue team ventured down to Bluff to play the Bluffies. With Cullen & Daniel not attending & Lucy away rock n rolling we were down on numbers. Bluff kindly lent us 3 players { Thanks Shane} & with Jacob coming down with Dean Addie: we had Dean’s boy Tom play for us. Tom normally plays for Marist U8 so thank you Dean & Tom.
 The game started with Bluff using their bigger forwards to push our  guys around & ended up scoring 1st. Our boys face an up hill battle every week playing against bigger teams; played out of their skins defended their butts off & scored some good team tries to go into halftime with a  1 try lead. The 2nd half was much the same with us holding the lead until Bluff scored a last minute try to tie the game.
 Players to stand out were forwards  Sam McDonald; Jack Butler ; Lachie Nimmo & Joshua McDonough. These boys gave as good as they got; with young Josh getting knocked around abit but still played on. Well done Josh. Jacob Mika continues to be the backbone of the team while Jacob Kura pulled off some big plays with huge blokes running at him he didn’t shy away from his duties. Well done boys a big improvement from previous weeks.

P.O.B U9 BLUE REPORT v STAR

7/15/2012

The P.O.B U9 Blue team played Star at CPT 5 on Saturday 14th July. The team had 10 players with Flynn not playing. Star had 13 players so they lent us 1 of their players. Thanks to the Star coaches & players for doing that.
 The game itself was a tough; physical & tight encounter with both teams putting their bodies on the line. Mistakes proved costly from both teams. Star ended up winning but we had our chances with us knocking the ball on over the line & cutting back inside with an unmarked player out wide. We will learn from our mistakes {even the All Blacks  lose sometimes }. In saying that the guys played their guts out & were told to hold their heads up high as both teams played some cracking rugby. We just let Star get away with some close quarter stuff like letting them slow down the play of the  ball & not blowing them out  rucktime. {Lookout practise Thursday night }
 Even though we lost their were a lot more positives with the highlight been Lucy ‘ Goosey’ Hall outflanking the Star defenders to score a brilliant try in the corner. The end of the day the team is playing good hard & positive rugby.

Club Day Saturday 30th June

The P.O.B U9 Blue team faced off against the P.O.B Black team at Lithgow St . The ground was frozen and bloody cold so thank you Mums, Dads & supporters for coming along. The Blue team wore mufti jerseys so we wouldn’t clash with Braggy’s boys. It was the 1st & hopefully last chance to see Jack Butler wear a Marist rugby jersey in anger.{ It brought a smile to his Grandad’s face}.

 Our tactics for day were to keep the ball away from their big forwards like Jayden Goble & Matthew Bragg & shift the ball wide. Things didn’t start well for us with Jayden especially dominating up front. Jayden is really developing as a footy player & it is good to see him with his ‘tough as nails’  approach to his game.
 With the guys lacking a bit of size & not playing to our strengths we went into halftime a try down. Some good work by Jacob Mika & Daniel Bremner kept us in the hunt. The 2nd half started off as the same with the Black team scoring. Then the Blue team turned their switch on & started playing some footy. With some good defensive work & some excellent team work on attack we scored some beautiful team tries. Overall in trying conditions both teams played an entertaining game of rugby.

 The team was well led  by Lachie Nimmo; with Jacob Mika ; Daniel Bremner & Sam McDonald making some big game plays. Lucy Hall & Jacob Kura are showing what good skills they have with Lucy’s passing & Jacob’s step setting up a fantastic team try. Flynn Jackson again organised things well from halfback. Sean Dockerty & Jack Butler played a more aggressive game who along with Sam teamed up to counter Jayden’s lineout driving. Great work guys. But the biggest performance from my point of view was Joshua McDonough. With Cullen McLeod off with the flu { His Mum told me Dad had a bigger case of man flu & Mums there is no worse sickness than that} young Josh had to move from centre to the front row. He not only excelled in the tight stuff but still did his other work as well & was in charge of the line outs. Great stuff Josh.

 Overall this was the tough game the guys needed after some pretty easy victories so I’m happy with the ticker the team showed on Saturday. We will be having a week off for the holidays & get back into training Thursday the 12th July. Have a good holiday guys & look after your parents .

Pirates Old-Boys under 9 Blue v Woodlands

On Saturday 23rd June the Blue team played Woodlands at the club.There was a shower just before kick off but the ground was in good condition. We had Lucy Hall away for the weekend & with the Black team playing at CPT Park we called in Ben Jennings from the under 10s to make up numbers. Also Seth Ryder from the Black team turned up for us.

  Special thanks to the  Woodlands coach Brett Wylie for allowing both teams to play everybody. I wish some other teams were as  easy  to work with. No point in having kids standing on the sideline in those weather conditions.

The game itself turned out to be a cracker with both teams playing positive rugby. With some beautiful team tries being scored the boys were enjoying their footy. Once again Jacob Mika stood out with his aggressive style of play. The guys had excellent passing between them with Jacob Kura; Flynn Jackson; Josh McDonough; Seth Ryder; Daniel Bremner ;Ben Jennings & Sam McDonald linking up with probably our most dangerous runner on the day Lachie Nimmo. Speaking of Sammy he was unlucky to have 2 tries disallowed due to knocking the ball on over the tryline. 1 of the highlights for the coach was Sean Dockerty nearly scoring his 1st try from a scrum move. Keep putting the hard yards in Seano it’s not far away.The team was well led by Cullen McLeod.With the game getting away from Woodlands we gave them Jack Butler who went on to score for them as well as setting up another try  as well. He had a good game for them & was a bloody nuisance for us; which made the coach happy.

Overall the team is ticking along quite nicely & with some improvements to be made we should be more than a match for some of the bigger teams.

POB under 9 Blue v Waikiwi - 16.06.12

On Saturday 16th the Under 9 Blue team played Waikiwi on their clubday at Waikiwi rugby grounds
The conditions were good with a frost settling in overnight. Thank god for our Under 8s for softening up the ground for us.  Speaking of the Under 8s; with our Black team playing Marist at Centrepoint  we had to get a ring-in from their team. The ring-in was Jumping Jack O’Connell & I would like to thank Joe & Victoria for letting us unleash Jack onto the Waikiwi boys.

The pre-game warm-up went well & I felt the guys would be fizzing when the game started.Sure enough Waikiwi kicked off with Jack Butler catching the ball & running away to score in the corner from the 1st play.The game ended up getting away from Waikiwi with P.O.Bs scoring some beautiful team tries. But credit where credits due Waikiwi never gave up & gave us a run for our money. The guys knew they had a game on their hands.
 Probably the try of the game was scored by Lachie Nimmo who left his Dad’s pace at home & brought his Mum’s instead which saw him dot down after the ball had moved through several sets of hands.
In all the whole team played well with special mention to Cullen McLeod for his work in the tight stuff &  to our halfback Flynn Jackson who ran the show nicely. The guys clocked up big score but still let Waikiwi in for a well deserved try.

 P.O.B Under 9 Blue report

On Saturday 9th the under 9 Blue team {Smurfs} played Blues at CPT 5.
The guys {Sorry Lucy} ran out comfortable winners in the end. The game itself was a very physical encounter with the coach pleased with the controlled aggression the team showed.Also pleasing was the way the team started to gel.
Blues gave us a run for our money in the tight stuff but had no answer out wide with the likes of Sam McDonald;Jack Butler;Jacob Kura & Daniel Bremner using their pace to outflank the Blues defenders.It was good to have Daniel back & it showed last week against Marist how much we missed him.
The captain for the day was Sean Dockerty who along with Cullen McLeod have made big improvements every game much to the coaches delight. Coach John Butler was also happy with the way Lachie Nimmo;Lucy Hall & Jacob Mika played stating they are producing abit of mongrel into their game.Also to mention was the support play of Josh McDonough who was able to be a vital link to help the team to score out wide.All in John is impressed with the team & hope they can keep improving each game.
