After such a strong and positive season the boys went into this match confident they could do the business. Unfortunately, the course of the match was dramatically changed, when big ball runner and defender Eti, was red carded for an incident that some may suggest, deserved a yellow card at best. However, it was important the lads came back strong from this and front up.... The result of some hard work and pretty solid defence saw them leading by 10 - 8 with 3 minutes to go.... Excelsior were hard on attack and held up over the line. They proceeded to then score of the back of the 5 metre scrum. POB tried their best to get back into range to score, but it wasn't to be... Oh well, the positive they can take from this is at least 2 or 3 of the boys will be back to play again next season instead of hanging up the boots on a winning note.....

The Div 2s carried on their recent form with a 42-29 dorking of Marist! At one stage the Bs went 30-3 up in as many minutes in the first half. The B’s have had a massive last four games amassing 146 points (23 tries) to 63 (9 tries). Unreal considering their previous 10 games they only scored 154 points (24 tries). The boys season is now over which is a shame because they were running home stronger than Kiwi in the ’83 Melbourne Cup! --- The Cs “2nd Test” vs Wyndham, proved to be that as Wyndham fronted in the first half but Jo’s boys still managed to shine with a 26-0 win. This week see the Cs hosting the Southland Wide Presidents Grade final against their old foe Excelsior at Pirates Old Boys. Kick off at 2:30. Get behind the boys as they seek redemption! The U18s were unsuccessful in the quarter final to Boys High’ which bring the good first season in the Blue and Black to a close. Hopefully we will see some boys progress into the Bs and more join the u18s next year. Also - POB Under 10’s - the clubs only unbeaten team this year are facing their biggest challenge this Saturday at Star 9.30, wander down. Events – Club Prize Givings Junior -18th August, photos taken on the day. See your coach. Senior - Looking likely August 25th (details TBC) Curtain raiser to the ABs v Wallabies 7:35 kickoff, team photos to be handed out then.
A quick glance at the points table will show the lads are playing well this year.
11 games played, 10 wins, 411 points for 92 against. The one loss was to Excelsior the perennial heavy weights of C rugby, was not helped by the Captain Ray Harvey deciding that would be a good day to get married. That game aside the lads have dominated all other teams and provided we win the last game of the round against Wyndham will finish top of the table. All expectations are the final will be a repeat of last year’s P-OB v’s Excelsior encounter, except this year we should have home ground advantage and hopefully take the honours. While enjoying the on field victory’s the team is still trying to uphold the tradition of C’s rugby with everyone getting a run and having the best themed bus trips. The “Canadian Tuxedo” trip to Te Anau show cased the commitment to art of dressing up including a stunning cross dressing effort by Wade. On the field the team has enjoyed the wealth of possession gained by the big forward pack, which more often than not is converted into points by the strong running back line. Players to stand out so far this year in the backs are; Shane, Yap, Keith, Wade, Laffu, Jarred, Ray & Jade while in the forwards Dave, Ette, Mike, Adam, Brendon, Al, Joseph, Cooz, Stiff, Divs, Geoff Ryan, Leo, Ants, Bob & Gary continue to impress with a good amount (often) vocal direction coming from Phil (and Steve in a cameo run v Te Anau) in the Halfback spot. While no team can function without the skilled support of management/water boys/tee boys/and valuables bag holder we would not like to take any of the limelight off the players above, although a couple of the management team joined the boys wallowing in the mud in the final minutes of the Te Anau match. With a place already confirmed in the finals the lads are fine tuning the things that work for us, while eliminating the moves that don’t. · Forwards kicking the ball · Tight forwards standing in the back line · Backs backchatting the ref · The Sonny Bill pass... · Picking a player of the day that can win the pint skull
The C’s first game for the year was a dazzling display of running rugby, a fitting occasion for club day and the return to the clubrooms after 15 years in the wilderness.
It was an ominous start when management had to go through 3 old gear bags to find enough 3XL jerseys to fit the 6 props and 1 full back turning out for the 2012 season. The afternoon started badly when both Adam and Ray announced they were suffering from food poisoning (drinking from the same fountain I suspect) and were unsure of their fitness, this was soon forgotten when the team went on a try scoring rampage that resulted in a final score of 66 – 0 over a gallant Bluff side. Hard to praise individuals in such a game, but Jarrod’s debut at Ist five with his 100% conversion rate deserves mention, along with Eti’s first and final game of the season before going for knee reconstruction this week. As usual by the end of the evening half the team were looking for Steve Hanson’s number to ring and ask if he had heard the result, and to check if they were still in contention for the Irish tests. Due to a minor management error the score card was handed to the ref before noting down the individual try scorers, but it would be fair to say the backs scored the lion’s share of the tries after some strong setup work by the forwards. Tackling was also a highlight with the big Bear putting in 3 consecutive tackles in the first passage of play. A fine start to the season only eclipsed by young Dave’s rendition of “Sultans of swing” later on that evening, not sure what the big guy beside him was doing, but I guess he stopped the girls mobbing the stage. |
