It was an ominous start when management had to go through 3 old gear bags to find enough 3XL jerseys to fit the 6 props and 1 full back turning out for the 2012 season.
The afternoon started badly when both Adam and Ray announced they were suffering from food poisoning (drinking from the same fountain I suspect) and were unsure of their fitness, this was soon forgotten when the team went on a try scoring rampage that resulted in a final score of 66 – 0 over a gallant Bluff side.
Hard to praise individuals in such a game, but Jarrod’s debut at Ist five with his 100% conversion rate deserves mention, along with Eti’s first and final game of the season before going for knee reconstruction this week.
As usual by the end of the evening half the team were looking for Steve Hanson’s number to ring and ask if he had heard the result, and to check if they were still in contention for the Irish tests.
Due to a minor management error the score card was handed to the ref before noting down the individual try scorers, but it would be fair to say the backs scored the lion’s share of the tries after some strong setup work by the forwards.
Tackling was also a highlight with the big Bear putting in 3 consecutive tackles in the first passage of play.
A fine start to the season only eclipsed by young Dave’s rendition of “Sultans of swing” later on that evening, not sure what the big guy beside him was doing, but I guess he stopped the girls mobbing the stage.
