So if you want to see some good age group rugby get down to the club on Friday night 4:30pm kick off...
Forget about the Super XV final on Saturday night this is the big clash of the weekend... MTF Vehicle Finance POB Blue v Marist Black in the U13 grade. Marist have gone thru the season unbeaten with only 1 point separating these 2 teams in their previous match.
So if you want to see some good age group rugby get down to the club on Friday night 4:30pm kick off...

Jamie Mackintosh, Tony Keresoma, Talemaitoga Tuapati, Jason Rutledge, Dillon Halaholo, Juan (JP) Koen, Morgan Mitchell, Michael Fatialofa, Josh Bekhuis, Craig Smith, John Hardie, Tim Boys, Mike Stewart, Brenton Howden, Alex Taylor, Elliot Dixon, Bill Fukofuka, Scott Eade, Tayler Adams, Lima Sopoaga, Willis Halaholo, Cardiff Vaega, Keanu Kahukura, Bryan Milne, Mark Jackman, Lolohea Loco, Junior Ngaluafe, Warrick Lynn, Otulea Katoa, Jamie Verran. Despite the senior club season finishing last Saturday there is plenty of rugby still on the calendar... the Southland Wide Division 1 & 2 finals are being played back to back on Rugby Park on Saturday afternoon... 2 weekends of junior club rugby still to go... U38/48/65kg sub union rugby is in progress over the next 2 Sundays plus the Super 15 final being played in Sydney on Sat night...
Despite putting plenty of effort into the game in challenging conditions the POB Senior Cs weren't rewarded on the scoreboard in the Senior C final with Albion - Excelsior taking the win. The Forklifts NZ POB Div2 team had the misfortune of playing Albion - Excelsior after the Cs game on the chewed up surface of the Gore Showgrounds. On a better day the boys would have got the ball a bit wider but it was a day of tackling, rucks and scrums with A-E winning 18 - 14. Was good to see motorboat and gilligan back in the team. The last game of the season saw the Div2 boys on tour with a onesie theme which added a bit of colour to the pubs we visited. Unfortunately the Prems season ended with the Galbraith Shield semi final loss last weekend however the show goes on with the Forklifts NZ POB Div2 team and the POB Senior Cs hitting the road to Gore on Sat. The Cs face Albion Excelsior in the Presidents grade final - 1:30 kickoff at the Gore Showgrounds and after that the Div2 boys take on Albion Excelsior at 3pm in the last game of the Div2 Championship round robin. There is a onesie dress code for Div2 on the way home so if you are keen to come up for the day and aren't worried about what time you get home let us know and we will fit you on the bus - contact Nimz on 0211 915 162. This is the last game of the season for the Div2 team who have had a pretty good season overall however we seem to have misplaced a couple of players during the season - big angry and Ned Flanders. If you see these guys wandering the streets looking for their rugby team hand them in at your nearest police station.
Other news - Tua, Doof, Jaye Thompson, Barney & Mike Molloy line up for the Spartans v the Sassenachs in Dunedin on Sunday. In the Southland U19 squad (I think) this year are: Josh Reedy, Ben Keenan, Dom Holland-Collins, Jaye Thompson & Mike Molloy. The Southland Rams have announced their training squad and a good number of boys from the Prems and Div2 are in the squad at the moment. Also plenty of young POB players putting in the hard yards training for the North Town U38, 48 & 65kg teams with games for all teams in Gore on Sunday this weekend. If you can't make the trip to Gore on Sat to watch the Cs & Div2 games the Galbraith Shield final is 3pm at Rugby Park. Unfortunately the result didn't go the way the club wanted and the Forde Auto Services Prems went down 37 - 32 to Woodlands in the Galbraith Shield semi final at Les George Oval on Saturday. The team stayed in touch all game but unfortunately the referees arm seemed to only go one way and dished out the majority of penalties to Woodlands. A dubious yellow card also had a big effect on the game with Woodlands capitalising on the scoreboard while one of the POB flankers was in the bin. Woodlands built a handy lead and unfortunately time ran out the clock before the boys could close the gap. POB lock Craig Smith making some yards up the middle: Not a good day at the office for the Forklifts NZ POB Div2 team who had to beat Blues to stay in contention for the Div2 final. Due to a managerial error the kicking tee didn't make it to the game and 2 gimme kicks in front of the post were missed and things didn't improve from there. The boys tried hard all game but it was just one of those days where things didn't click despite all the effort the boys put in. Final score 31 - 5 to Blues. VB doing some damage in the front row... On a better note the Div2 bbq while watching the premier semi final went flawlessly with Ropo putting in a man of the match performance with the tongs... The nice clear calm conditions out at Les George saw the smell of the bbq waft across the ground and caused POB flanker Nick Hayes some mid game hunger pains down on the far 22.
Good news for the POB Senior Cs, a 21 - 12 victory over the Delights will see them on the bus to Gore for their 6th final in row against Albion Excelsior. Over in South Africa the Highlanders were going well and were leading the Sharks 27 - 25 with about 10 to go when unfortunately a missed touch finder saw the Sharks get back into Highlanders territory and kick a couple of late penalties to win 31 - 27. Good effort by JP Koen who got on with 25 minutes to go and went really well It will be a big day for the Pirates Old Boys Rugby Club out at the Centrepoint rugby grounds on Saturday.
1:15pm on CP4 sees the Forklifts NZ POB Div2 team up against Blues in the Div2 top 6 round. CP4 has been a happy hunting ground for the Div2 team over the years. Both teams still have a chance of making the Div2 final and it should be a good contest. 2:30pm on Les George Oval - POB U7s will be playing Marist. 3pm on Les George Oval - the Forde Auto Services POB Premiers v Woodlands. The boys have been working hard all year to get this opportunity and like the good horse trainer he is head coach Matt Saunders got the team into the top 4 just a nose ahead of the Barbarians. Check out the back page of Thursdays Southland Times for a preview of the Galbraith Shield semi finals. The Senior Cs are taking on the Haiwaian Delights in the Senior C semi final - kickoff 2:30pm at the club. To have all 3 senior teams going well at the pointy end of the competition is a great effort so get out to Centrepoint on Saturday arvo and give the Div2 & Premiers plenty of support and then get to the clubrooms after the game. Other news... JP Koen continues his globe trotting with the Highlanders and is currently in South Africa getting ready to face the Sharks in Durban. JP has certainly racked up the air miles in recent weeks having been to Sydney, back to NZ and now South Africa... After a week off due to school holidays junior rugby kicks off this weekend. Here's the weekend draw for all POB teams. After the weekend games the Galbraith Shield semi finalists have been confirmed. Well done to the Forde Auto Services Prems who have qualified in 4th place for the semis.
Both Galbraith semi finals are at Les George Oval this saturday... Early game (1pm) is Star v Marist and at 3pm - Forde Auto Services POB Premiers v Woodlands. The Forklifts NZ POB Div2 team had a good crack at knocking over Marist but came up short on the scoreboard 27 - 20. The Div2 boys had a King Neptune themed court session on Sat night, without saying too much it involved varying amounts of beer, mud, ice and water. The showers looked like some sort of disaster area this morning but as always a few surviving cans were found in the debris and they will be making the bus trip to Gore in a couple of weeks. The Senior Cs came away with the points from their trip to Gore and notched up a 40 5 win over Pioneer. The Super 15 playoffs have been confirmed with the Highlanders packing their bags and heading to South Africa to play the Sharks in Durban. No junior rugby this weekend so a nice relaxing Sat morning for parents & players.
The Forde Auto Services POB Prems are on the bus to Gore to play the Barbarians - 3pm at the Gore show grounds. The POB Senior Cs are on the road to Gore as well to play Pioneer, kickoff at 1:45pm at Pioneer. Looks like coach Jo Russell will have a few more numbers to call on this week and will be able to leave the boots at home. Forklifts NZ POB Div2 have got game #3 in the Div2 top 6 round robin - 3pm at Centrepoint #6. Marist have been the team to beat in Div2 this season, the last match up between the teams was back in early April which saw Marist take the honours 27 - 13. If you can't make it to Gore to watch the Cs/Prems in action pop out to Centrepoint for a bit of grassroots footy. Should be a good game if the weather stays dry. Some real superstars in the Div2 POB line up starting with VB in the front row, Justin Bieber at lock, wee angry at 7 and on their day a semi useful backline... JP is slipping into the Highlanders jersey again tonight v the Crusaders. The results of last nights games have been in favour of the Highlanders and they are in the playoffs. Highlanders will still be looking for a win to improve their playoff position. ***Due to the Prems and Cs being up in Gore and the Div2 game out at Centrepoint being Marist's home game the POB clubrooms won't be open today*** Not a good result for the Highlanders over in Sydney on Sunday, however one bonus in the Highlanders lineup was.... Awesome... JP got on with about 5 minutes to go, went well in last couple of scrums in the game.
Forde Auto Services Prems 27 Star 33. Good effort for the boys who due to injuries were short of options on the bench, good news is that they picked up a bonus point which locks them into the top 4 for the Galbratih Shield semi finals in a fortnight.
Forklifts NZ POB Div2 team went down 25 nil to Riverton. A good first 1/2 with POB having the better of territory and possession was not rewarded on the score board and the 1/2 time score was 3 nil to Riverton. Riverton kicked on in the 2nd 1/2 and with a game plan that suited the conditions took their opportunities and came away with the points. The Senior Cs had a win on the road up in Pukerau 24 - 17. The Cs are throwing everything at the competition this year with coach Jo Russell fitting in some game time as well. Some junior rugby results... The match up between the 2 MTF Vehicle Finance POB U13 teams at Les George saw the blue team win 34 - 5. The Hecton Agrifocus Products POB U11 team beat Woodlands 37 - 10. Best all round performance by the team so far this year. The Ziffs POB U11 team lost to Marist (6 tries to 1). The POB U9 team beat Waikiwi 3 tries to 1. Don't forget Highlanders v Waratahs game from Sydney later this arvo 6pm kickoff I think... |
