Night N Day Pirates-Old Boys Under 9 took on the strong Marist Green side this weekend. Although beaten 25-5 the team performed superbly working to a plan to stop the big Marist forwards running rampant up the middle. Aggressive gang tackling ensured that these monsters were shut down forcing Marist to look elsewhere to gain an advantage. Down 10-5 at the break the team conceded a run away try immediately but the game was in the balance until the final 3 minutes where Marist scored 2 tries out wide after freeing the ball from maul situations with most players committed to the breakdown. The team did well getting numbers to the tackle and tying up the ball and there were some huge hits put in by player of the day Jayden Goble, Neha Kane and Trent Hogg. On attack the boys had Marist stretched a few times with Jayden proving difficult to stop. Good support for ball carriers was provided by Bailey Stewart (aka Turtle) and Seth Ryder. Thanks to Ben Jennings and Eli Meuli who played 2 games today to help us out. They added some valuable experience and grunt to our side and must have been knackered by the time the game was finished. We have a few things to work on such as off-loading at the right time, keeping players out wide to defend and running straight instead of sideways on occasions but all in all a top effort from the boys today, probably the best of the season, deserving of a closer scoreline and the team can hold their heads up high. |

This week, the Cs host Wyndham again at POB in the Presidents grade semi final, with the boys looking to repeat last weeks effort and host the club final the following week. Kick-off is at 2pm.
The Forklifts NZ Div2’s play host to Marist, who like Star, have had the upper hand in past years but the boys are keen to continue their recent form and enjoy their last game of the season. Kick-off is at 3pm. Its Do or Die time for the u18s, who face a Boys high 2nd XV seeking revenge after our boys have managed to win their two previous games in tight tussles. Their quarter final is to be played at Centrepoint 4 with kick off at 1:15pm. The Div2’s are initiating “Bring a date night” this Saturday, so bring your other half along to the club and we will see if we can twist Monkeys arm and a get a deal done on drinks for ladies or at least a plate of Savouries (old school!)
A quick glance at the points table will show the lads are playing well this year.
11 games played, 10 wins, 411 points for 92 against. The one loss was to Excelsior the perennial heavy weights of C rugby, was not helped by the Captain Ray Harvey deciding that would be a good day to get married. That game aside the lads have dominated all other teams and provided we win the last game of the round against Wyndham will finish top of the table. All expectations are the final will be a repeat of last year’s P-OB v’s Excelsior encounter, except this year we should have home ground advantage and hopefully take the honours. While enjoying the on field victory’s the team is still trying to uphold the tradition of C’s rugby with everyone getting a run and having the best themed bus trips. The “Canadian Tuxedo” trip to Te Anau show cased the commitment to art of dressing up including a stunning cross dressing effort by Wade. On the field the team has enjoyed the wealth of possession gained by the big forward pack, which more often than not is converted into points by the strong running back line. Players to stand out so far this year in the backs are; Shane, Yap, Keith, Wade, Laffu, Jarred, Ray & Jade while in the forwards Dave, Ette, Mike, Adam, Brendon, Al, Joseph, Cooz, Stiff, Divs, Geoff Ryan, Leo, Ants, Bob & Gary continue to impress with a good amount (often) vocal direction coming from Phil (and Steve in a cameo run v Te Anau) in the Halfback spot. While no team can function without the skilled support of management/water boys/tee boys/and valuables bag holder we would not like to take any of the limelight off the players above, although a couple of the management team joined the boys wallowing in the mud in the final minutes of the Te Anau match. With a place already confirmed in the finals the lads are fine tuning the things that work for us, while eliminating the moves that don’t. · Forwards kicking the ball · Tight forwards standing in the back line · Backs backchatting the ref · The Sonny Bill pass... · Picking a player of the day that can win the pint skull
