POB Forde Auto Services Premiers 17 Woodlands 23 - not the result the boys wanted, plenty riding on the 2 games left in the round robin against Star and the Barbarians...

Picture
Game 1 in the top 6 saw the POB Forklifts NZ Div2 come out on top 28 - 26 against Collegiate who are one of the front runners in the Div2 compeition. After failing to take a couple of chances to cross the try line POB held a 3 nil lead at 1/2 time. Once the 2nd 1/2 kicked off it was all go on the score board with Collegiate responding every time POB put points on the board. Final score 28 - 26. Tries to Dylan LOVETT, Josh REEDY and Rory JARMAN.

Some excellent kicking from Jordan DAVIS saw 2 conversions and 3 penalties adding 13 crucial points. Probably the finest display of kicking seen on CP 4 since Jamie CLARK had a crack at banging one over in front of the posts against Midlands a couple of years ago.

Pat on the back for Lachie NIMMO for giving up his goal kicking practice and handing over his kicking tee for the afternoon.

Thanks to Ref Jimmy CURRAN who did a good job controlling the game.
A good win for the Senior Cs 22 -16 against a strong Waikaka team.

The Hawkies Gold Cup race night went well. Getting the horse across the line involved a lot of skill, technique and luck.

Mid week update...

If you can view this video it should give you a rough idea how the Hawkies Gold Cup race night will go on Saturday night. Looks like it will be a fun night with a few variables to consider when placing your bets.
GOOD NEWS - Congratulations to JP KOEN who has been named in the Highlanders wider training squad for the rest of the season. JP has made some real progress thru the ranks recently. It was only a couple of years ago that JP and Craig 'Doof' SMITH were playing a few games for the Div2 team after the Premier season had ended to keep their fitness up until the Southland Development Squad got up and running.

Think we would struggle to slip them onto the Div2 team card these days but is a great reflection of the contribution they make to the club. On that note it is good to see a number of the guys in the premier squad (Oscar JENKINS, Jay THOMPSON, Jack SHARLAND) this year have spent a year or so in Div2 before taking the big step up to the Premier team.

BAD NEWS - yeah unfortunately Crazy did something to a muscle in his arm (must be great to have muscles) against Midlands so will be pacing the sideline for a while.

BULA BULA
Fiji had a close loss to Samoa 18 - 13 at the weekend. Tua started at hooker again. Big game for Fiji this weekend against the Cook Islands with the winner qualifying for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

WEEKEND DRAW - here it is... schoolboy teams, these games are sometimes subject to change due to ground conditions so check with your coach on Thurs night.

HAWKIES GOLD CUP RACE NIGHT - THIS SATURDAY

After the Premier Management Quartet stole the show by channeling Kiss in the Hawks Idol Lip Sync competition this year it is time to put your money where your mouth is with the 1st Annual Hawkies Gold Cup race night.

Unlike other race nights where you punt on the pony, this race night requires you pick the skill of the jockey.

Each race during the night will run like this -

The racers aka. Jockeys will sit on chairs about a meter apart with the roller in their hand, each horse is pulled out and around a bucket of sand almost back to the racer again.  The starting gun goes off and the horses are rolled in. The winner gets to go through to the semis and so on.

The Gold Cup race will be presented to the Winning Jockey on the night.

There will be team races, Fillies and Mares race and Supporters race.

Punting on the race -
buy 10 tickets for $10

4 jockeys to a race, beside each jockey will be the colour they are racing and beside that is what they are paying to win. This will be up on the white board
e.g.
BLUE...Yappa....3 to win    GREEN ...Cesil.....2 to win    YELLOW ...Meikle...4 to win    RED...Rolly... 5 to win

The punter comes up to the Tote (betting desk) and bets 2 tickets on Rolly they will receive their RED betting ticket with 2 on it.  If Rolly wins the punter will get back 10 tickets (2x5), if not they get nothing. We only pay out the winner!!  and only get paid out for that race - Punters can't 'forget' and bring up the red betting ticket after the next race.

First race start just after 7pm

Forde Auto Services POB Premiers 68 - Midlands 0. Tough game for Midlands who had a number of their front line players unavailable and only 2 or 3 players on the bench. Check out the Southland Times on Monday for further info re who scored what.

Forklifts NZ POB Div2 3 - Riverton 11. Good hit out for the Div2 boys against a side that have been near the top of the Div2 points table throughout the season.
The Div2 round robin has finished with the division splitting into top 6 (Championship) / bottom 6 (Plate) with all teams starting on zero points, think the top 2 teams on points from this round go straight to a final.

Yogi Time...
Picture
The Forklifts NZ sponsored POB Div2 team finished the round robin in 6th place and will have a tough 5 games in the Championship ahead of them. The team have played some good footy this year with one of the teams strengths being the good numbers we have been getting to training. Hopefully the team can continue the hard work and have a good crack at the top 6.

Top 6 draw
28 June v Collegiate
5 July v Riverton (away)***
12 July v Marist (away)
19 July v Blues
26 July v Albion Excelsior (away)***

*** = bus trip (which the boys always enjoy)

The POB Senior Cs also got back on track with a good win over the Blues All Stars out at Centrepoint. Special occasion father and son, Chuck and Mitch McAulay pulling on the boots together for the first time. Back again next week Chuck?

Highlanders v New Zealand Barbarians

The Highlanders and Rugby Southland in conjunction with the New Zealand Barbarians are excited to bring this once in a lifetime showcase game to Rugby Park, Invercargill. The New Zealand Barbarians led by President Bryan Williams are very keen to see the globally respected and highly recognisable Barbarian brand showcased in the deep South.

The Barbarians will be coached by Stags coach, Brad Mooar, and managed by Leicester Rutledge. Like traditional Barbarian teams there is likely to be an international flavour to the selection along with a number of promising Stags and players from other New Zealand provinces.

This is a key game for the Highlander's leading into their final three games of the 2014 Investec Super Rugby regular season and is bound to be a must-see.

There will be a Highlanders 1st XV competition curtain-raiser kicking off at 5pm between Menzies and St. Peters College showcasing the school boy talent from around the region.

So make sure you come down to Rugby Park, Invercargill on Friday 20th June and show your support for The Highlanders!

Gates open at 4.30pm

Its cold, its wet, its miserable - great conditions for rugby...

One of the big match ups of the day will be the 10am head to head clash between the two POB U11 teams at Surrey Park . Another game to watch will be the match up between MTF vehicle Finance U13 blue team against Marist. Both teams unbeaten in the grade so far this season so will be interesting to see the result of this game - get up early to watch this one: 9:15am kickoff at Surrey Park

Forde Auto Services Prems - 3pm out at Centrepoint 7. With 4 players backing up from the NZ Barbarians v Highlanders game the Premiers will be faced with a tough task against a Midlands team looking for their first win of the season.

POB Senior Cs v Blues All Stars - also out at Centrepoint somewhere, kickoff around 1:30pm.

Here's the weekend draw for all teams - hasn't got the Cs on it and the Prems are definitely at CP7 but pretty sure everything else is ok.
